Event date: July 20, 2008 -- Location: Channel Islands Harbor Near Channel Islands Landing, Oxnard, California -- Locals rescue man who panics in the water -- Photos to follow: nine.

Boat to the Rescue

A man fell out of his kayak in Channel Islands Harbor. He helplessly flailed his arms and cried out for help. Larry and Sally Grix were docked with their 20' Key West boat at Channel Islands Landing dock. They hopped in their boat, arrived at the scene, and encouraged the panicking man to stay calm. The man indicated that he was having difficulties breathing. As a result, the manager at Channel Islands Landing called 9-1-1.

Failed Attempt to Load Man Aboard Boat

The captain, Larry Grix, brought his boat up to the man in the water in an attemt to load the man aboard the boat. However, Larry's crew (which included his petit wife, Sally) did not have the strength to lift the man.

The next craft to arrive was a jet ski with two men aboard. The jet ski passenger, garbed in wet suit, jumps into the water to help the man.

Jet Ski Passenger Helps Man

At this point, everyone decided that it would be easier to use the jet ski with raft to carry the man to safety. Everyone worked together to make this happen.

Jet Ski with Man Onboard

The jet skier and his friend managed to get the man on the raft that the jet ski was towing. The Harbor Patrol (far right) also arrived, and the Harbor Patrolman gave advice to the amateur rescuers.

Emergency Crew

Four emergency vehicles (including two fire engines, one ambulance, and one emergency truck) were already on standby at the old boat ramp. Great response time, guys!

Closeup of emergency crew meeting the man

When the man arrived at the boat ramp, he was able to walk up the ramp with a little assistance. The emergency professional greeted him and took him to the hospital. We're pretty sure the man survived the ordeal thanks to all the friendly fellow locals and the fast-responding emergency crew.

Event date: April 24, 2007 -- Location: Oxnard Shores Near the Power Plant, Oxnard, California -- Plane lands on the beach -- Photos to follow: three.

Plane and Power Plant

A vintage airplane caught fire while flying over Oxnard and was forced to make a belly landing at Oxnard Shores, narrowly missing a fisherman as it slid across the sand. Neither of the two people inside the propeller-driven fighter plane nor the fisherman on the beach were hurt. The aircraft, a T-28 Trojan Fennec, is a piston-engine-powered plane used by the U.S. armed forces for training from the 1950s to the early 1970s.

Plane on Crane

The After Math.....On April 25, 2007 clean up crew is attempting to move the plane off the beach (yeah, right). After sitting on the crane for a day, the plane was moved away by a truck or something. It must have been quite a road hog. We would have liked to seen it!
